I think my first realization that I wanted to learn how to make money online was when I realized that I was just running out of time. I was working as an independent consultant in the technology field selling my time by the hour and making a pretty good living.
The problem was, once I got to where I was working the longest hours possible per day per week my income not only topped out but I was quickly wearing out. The only way I could make more money was to raise my rates; and if I wanted to work fewer hours then I would have to really raise my rates.
Reason #1: I wanted to spend more time with my family. In order to make that nice income, I had worked my tail off. That left little time for my family and zero time for myself. I found myself on the road driving like a maniac so that I could get more time out of my day. I would eat my lunch while driving or if possible, while waiting for some lethargic Microsoft program to install or cogitate.
It didn’t take the math genius in me to determine that if I cut my hours enough to have the time I wanted with my family, I did not make enough money to do things with my family that I wanted to do with them. I figured that if could learn how to make money online that I would have my solution.
Reason #2: I realized how much time I was spending just driving. Even though I have a nice truck that I like, and finally decided to install a decent stereo with a USB input, I really got fed up driving around behind slowpoke drivers in no hurry, many times on their cell phone chatting away. And, for eight months out of the year, I was battling delays in construction zones.
No one was paying me for my time while driving or sitting in traffic and it was doing nothing more than driving up my blood pressure rate.
Reason #3: Everyone was taking vacations or playing golf except me. I started to become frustrated watching my clients, who I had an excellent relationship with, take time off for golf, take a long weekend to Cancun, or going on a nice family vacation while I stayed back and worked.
Again, if I took the time off to do these things then there simply wasn’t enough money to do them. When you have to give up five hours of income in order to play 18 holes of golf that makes playing golf an even more expensive activity than it already is.
Reason #4: I wanted to have time and money for my hobbies. In a similar vein, I had to give up my hobby of flying. Again, it was the same old paradox of if I took the time for the hobby, there was no money to pay for the hobby.
Are there other hobbies I gave up and would like to get back into? Sure; I think so. Right now I cannot remember what they were anymore, but I know I use to have some! When you learn to make money online you create for yourself an income stream that is leveraged to the time you invest. So you can get paid while you play.
Reason #5: The cash register stopped ringing when I stopped working. It became real frustrating dealing with the reality that when I stopped working the cash register stopped ringing. I needed to find an income opportunity that kept bringing in cash even when I stopped working. Working online could provide a way to give me exactly what I was looking for without investing hundreds of thousands of dollars expanding my offline business with enough employees to reach the same goal.
Reason #6: Geographical freedom. Over the years I have had several reasons to want to move out of the area that we currently live in but we could not do so because this is where my business was and where my clients were located. What I determined was important was to find an income stream that was not dependent upon geography.
The internet goes anywhere you go. Want to rent a condo in Vail for week or two and work just a few hours, enough to write off part of the expense? Let that mountain air clear you head and invigorate your soul. A lot more fun than working 8 – 5 in Des Moines, IA, wouldn’t you guess?
Reason #7: Get your kids started in a family business with no limits. When I was growing up I had the opportunity to work in a family-owned business. While not the line of work of my dreams, it still provided both excellent life experience and an opportunity to make decent money. Perhaps that’s where I caught the bug to be my own boss.
Taking orders from others and working hard to build up the trust fund for their kids just did not seem to appeal to me. I want to be able to give my kids an opportunity to work in a family business and it was clear that not only did none of them have any interest in my off-line line of work but I did not want to saddle them with that kind of a job anyway.
Reason #8: Work at home, in the comfort of your home. In addition to not liking the amount of time I was spending driving I also found I enjoyed working at home. Doing remote IT work for my off-line business showed me how nice it was to work at home and not have to commute. I can wear comfortable clothes, shorts and T-shirt in the summer, and I can work the hours that I want to work.
If I feel tired after lunch I can take a nap and there’s no one to even notice let alone have a problem with that. If I wake up at 4 AM and find that I cannot return to sleep, I can get up and work knowing that I can take a nap later if I need to. This also gives me an opportunity to spend even more time with my family and enjoy more meals with them.
Reason #9: Stay healthy, avoid workplace germs including colds and H1N1 swine flu. Currently, as I write this, working at home has an even better sound to it since I am not in contact with a lot of others at work who may be sick with the swine flu. Not only might I catch it myself, but I could bring germs, viruses, and illness home to my family.
By working online at home I can live like a hermit when I feel the need to, or go out and hang out at the mall if I feel it is safe to do so; although quite frankly I don’t care much for the mall. But I know that I could go if I wanted to! On the flip side, if I am sick but feel Ok enough to get some work done I can. With a regular job I might feel compelled to stay home, not infect others, but not make any money either.
Reason #10: No more brown bag lunches on the run. This is sort of covered up above but from a different angle. No more brown bagging my lunch, or having to eat my lunch while driving! Working at home online I can prepare a hot meal if I want to heat up leftovers in the microwave or eat a sandwich if it suits me. And I’ve eaten so many sandwiches over the last 20 years that a cold sandwich seldom suits me anymore.
Will I gain weight? Nope. Because now I have an hour to spend exercising in the morning instead of driving to work and back. If I wake up late I can still exercise because there is no set time I have to start working.
Here I have listed 10 reasons why I wanted to learn how to make money online, but the truth is, I could probably come up with many more. My goal is just to give you a flavor of what YOU can do if you want to.
